We don't want Inflexible Flexibility, we want Flexible Flexibility

Your people don’t just want flex work – they want ‘flexible’ flex work. Let me explain …

With more and more people looking for ways to balance their professional and personal lives, flexibility has become a key factor in job satisfaction and retention.

However, not all flexibility is created equal – there are three main types:

1.      Inflexible flexibility.  The most basic form of flexibility is the permission to work from home for a fixed number of days – often set by the employer.

This type of flexibility is usually seen as a perk, rather than a right.

2.      Scattershot flexibility.  A less structured form of flexibility characterised by a lack of organisation and predictability.

People are permitted to work anytime, anywhere, often with little warning or planning, resulting in a disorganised and unpredictable work schedule.

3.      Progressive flexibility.  This is the preferred form of flexibility and the most beneficial for both organisations and workers as it aligns performance and work-life needs.
It empowers people to have a say in how flex work is implemented, while leaders provide resources. This results in mutual gain and a more productive and satisfied workforce.

Which type do you have in your organisation? Is your flex work inflexible, scattershot, or progressive?  What is the result of the type of flexibility that you have?
